Cultural Tourism

FREEDOM GARVEY-WARR

Supporting communities to share culture through enterprise.

In 2017, Kalumburu community leaders spoke to us about their aspirations for young people to learn skills in tourism whilst keeping culture strong.

Over the last three years, our partnership with the community has included:

  • Facilitating a men’s and youth carving skills camp focused on connecting people with traditional cultural practices in an effort to prevent crime and antisocial behaviour in the community.

  • Facilitating a pandanas weaving project to support young women to build plant knowledge, weaving skills, and foundational entrepreneurial skills, and to showcase pathways to employment through activities that draw on connection to culture and country.

  • Supporting the Tramulla Strong Women’s Group to develop historical and cultural walking tours in Kalumburu with leader Margaeret Peurmora launching ‘ See Kalumburu with Margaret’

  • Supporting Kalumburu community members to map out cultural enterprise dreams and ideas, and the steps required to achieve these.

  • Supporting Kalumburu community members and Kalumburu Aboriginal Corporation to develop partnerships to foster the skills required to develop cultural tourism opportunities in Kalumburu.

  • In 2022 Esther Waina with support from EWPA launched Yuulwaay a cultural awareness and bush products business

Bush Products

Esther Waina has been exploring bush products and bush foods business development whilst working as a local enterprise facilitator for Enterprise Partnerships WA. This has resulted in the launch of her business ‘Yuulwaay’. Watch Esther talking about her project and the impact it has had on her life and on Kalumburu. Pat Torres from Mayi Harvest provides mentoring to Esther and her family.

Margaret has visited Kalumburu three times across 2017, 2018 and 2019 to teach and mentor the women about remote entrepreneurship and how cultural tourism can support both economic and well-being aspirations.
